ABOUT MS. SANDRA:

Sandra A. J. Carter, BA (Hons) in Education and Training and an MSc in Tourism Development & Management, NPQH

Sandra came to the UAE over ten years ago from an Academy in the UK. There she was Vice Principal, responsible for the specialisms of Vocational Education and Business & Enterprise as well as being responsible for the upper school curriculum and alternative provision. She was asked to come to Dubai by a former colleague, as Vice Principal, to set up Vocational Education for a GEMS school and remained with GEMS almost ten years until September 2018.

Before coming to Dubai she was fortunate enough to have links with schools in China, Texas and Virginia and also spent a lot of time on school projects in The Gambia, West Africa. She remembers how heartening it was to see how keen the children were to learn despite having only the most basic of resources.

She is particularly passionate about helping students to see the relevance of lessons and developing the skills of the 21st Century, nurturing creativity and encouraging students to develop leadership qualities. They are, after all, our future. In 2002 Sandra had a book of resources published that was used throughout the UK for lessons.

Since being in Dubai Sandra has been involved in work in Kenya, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia. It’s interesting to see how countries are reaching towards the same goals but are at different stages.

Sandra believes that schools in the UAE, with such a diverse mix of cultures, make a valuable contribution to world peace and is proud to have been in schools where over 80 nationalities can live in peace and harmony.

Sandra has been involved in more than 15 school/college inspections at a leadership level and is therefore fully aware of the challenges that are faced by schools to evidence the great work they do.

Before moving into schools, Sandra spent 13 years teaching and managing the curriculum in a College of Further Education. More recently Sandra has been involved in educational projects as an advisor and developing learning that ‘adds colour to education’.

ABOUT CHRISTOPHER McDERMOTT:

Bachelor of Education (Hons) University of Cambridge, Master of Arts (Education) University of London, Master of Business Administration (International Education) University of Hull.

Christopher is currently working as an Educational Consultant, holding the position of Administration Adviser in Dubai, although he is based, for much of the time, just outside London. Immediately prior to his role as an Educational Consultant, Chris worked as Group Director for the Athena Group, with responsibilities across the whole group of schools. Previously, Chris had worked for many years as a School Principal, having led schools in London and Dubai at primary and secondary level, following the English National Curriculum and the International Baccalaureate.

Chris’ last four school inspection results have all reached the highest possible judgement of Outstanding. Chris’ last school in London moved from Satisfactory to Outstanding in two consecutive inspections, a feat achieved by only 3% of English and Welsh schools. Chris’ school in North West London was selected to be the Leadership Centre for that part of London. Chris qualified as a school inspector in England and Wales and became a National Leader of Education. He has led school inspections for the GEMS Education Group in the U.A.E..

His last Principalship was as the Founding Principal of Oaktree Primary School in Dubai when, in the school’s first year, a School Peer to Peer Review Report, under the KHDA’s Abundance Project, concluded that a strength of the school was “The experienced and well-qualified senior leadership team, which has had a huge impact in a short period of time.” In a Parent Survey in the first year, 100% of the parents who expressed a view opined that the school was well led and managed. Chris has also founded his own successful E.F.L. school, which was recognised by the Department for Education in England and Wales.

Chris is passionate in his educational philosophy, believing that the role of the leader is to inspire and enable others, because all success is achieved by the whole school community on behalf of the whole school community.

Chris has co-convened sessions for new principals to Dubai at the What Works conferences. He was delighted to have been honoured to be part of the team that represented the KHDA at the first IPEN (International Positive Education Network) conference in Dallas in the summer of 2016 and at the second IPEN conference in China in 2017. Chris is in the process of completing another Masters degree at the University of Cambridge in Educational Leadership and School Improvement. His major area of focus is the well-being of School Principals.
